[code] History was made at the Jersey Shore on Friday night as Steven Matz threw the first perfect game in the long and storied history of the Motor City Marauders, retiring all 27 New Jersey Riptide batters he faced in a 6-0 victory.
Matz struck out 11 hitters and dodged a number of bullets, including an Ozzie Albies ground out on a park roll (Comerica Park has an 87 percent chance of a hit), a missed deep fly by the EX power Anthony Rendon to lead off the eighth inning, and the craziest of all, a catch on a wild play OFR blooper by Cam Gallagher to lead off the ninth. MCM 2B Max Muncy made the grab and then collided with RF Nick Castellanos. Muncy was injured and missed the rest of the series, but preserved Matz's perfect game. Not wanting to risk injury to any more of his teammates, Matz struck out Erik Gonzalez and Harold Castro to finish things off.
The perfect game is the first since Max Scherzer threw one in 2018 for WMS. The only other one I'm aware of since 2010 is Jeremy Hefner's 2013 perfect game for Casper.
Congrats to Sean on the achievement! Even on the losing side, it was a fun game to be a part of.
